The Greenhouse

Adding a greenhouse to the garden

We have officially lived here for three years now. Although the yard had some pretty good bones, we had a lot of updating we needed to do. Last year we tore out old scrubs we just could not save, trimmed trees, and planted a few new plants in the landscape.

Not to be outdone by 2021 we decided that in 2022 we would expand our garden area. We have started that process by purchasing a greenhouse kit. That was the easy part, now for the fun. Digging out a 16×16 space that was 5 inches deep. It was just our luck that we had sold our excavator two weeks ago, so we ended up digging it by hand. While we were digging, we decided to dig out the holes for the four corner posts we were using to secure the structure and build the benches. We started around 4:00 and ended the job a couple hours later. That was day one.

After all that digging I was a little sore the morning of day two. But I was more excited than sore, so after our morning coffee we went out to get started. Today was going to be the day we were putting up the frame to the greenhouse.

And so, it began. What I thought would be a fairly easy process ended up being a little time consuming. The directions for the HFGH (Habor Freight Green House) were lacking a lot. Pictures were backwards, it was not clear if braces went over or under the window casings, and other little minor details that made the day a little longer. Although frustrating at times we got it done and our frame is up.

Day three I am on my own, so I am going to foil the end of the panels with tape. It is a little time consuming to do but while worth the process. It should keep water out of the inside of the panels which will keep mold out of the greenhouse.

After all the hard work and a couple weeks’ time the green house is up and running. I was able to start my seeds during our long winter. So, it was nice to have a greenhouse. Not sure I would have purchased the Habor Freight greenhouse had I know how cheap the design is. Lots of tweaking, and the doors are awful. The roof is the biggest problem here in windy Idaho. The panel design does not work. We had to add screws and additional pins, and we taped the ends. It still leaks and the wind has caught the corner of the panel and blew the pins away. We plan on building a new roof and door. After all the additional labor and supplies we would have been better off to upgrade our purchase.

All in all, it was a way for me to get a greenhouse and for that I am Beyond happy.
